The Calendar Story was presented by the MaGMA Collection at Sothebys in Paris from January 6 to 18, 2014.

The collector has come out as an artist: iconic contemporary works from the Singapore-based MaGMA Collection are transformed into multi-media diptychs thanks to Fairy Tales’ intriguing and poetic episodes, directly inspired by Moonbeam and Gabriel’s loving, mysterious and mystical quest.

The MaGMA Collection

At the heart of the MaGMA Collections origin in 1999 is a profound and life-changing encounter with a Roy Lichtenstein painting, Desk Calendar (1962), at MOCA in Los Angeles. The encounter, entitled the Calendar Story, marked an early and spectacular milestone for two lives coming to union and the subsequent building of a contemporary art collection.

The MaGMA Collection, lovingly assembled by Moonbeam and Gabriel, two passionate collectors, include more than 300 original works of primarily Asian contemporary art in different media
by significant artists such as Liu Ye, Nyoman Masriadi, Yue Minjun, Guangyi and Zeng Fanzhi.

About Fairy Tales

Fairy Tales is the MaGMA Collections first single-focus exhibition, a culmination of more than a few years of imaginative and bold visioning, meticulous research, adventurous collecting and most importantly of all, an unwavering belief in the power and actuality of divine providence.

Driven by The Calendar Story, Fairy Tales affects visitors with the power of each of its intriguing episodes, extending what has begun as a personal oral narrative into a compelling story of love, fate, wonder and quest for truth cast in a virtual exhibition form.

About the app

This iPad app is the virtual continuation of MaGMA’s seminal 2010 exhibition in Singapore and features one additional episode, MaGMA 1111, inspired by the demise of the first owner of Desk Calendar, Count Giuseppe Panza di Biumo, just as the exhibition was being dismantled.

Gabriel’s generation in France fondly remembers acting legend Gérard Philipe reading The Little Prince, Peter and the Wolf and the life of Mozart in LPs packaged inside children’s books. This is the inspiration behind Singapore’s foremost actor and theatre director Ivan Heng masterfully performing for MaGMA in this app.

Additional features include: original music by Ian Chee, Gabriel with dj George Leong, and Andayoma. Introduction by Kwok Kian Chow of the National Art Gallery, Singapore. Curatorial Notes by Christies’ specialist Wang Zineng. An Interview with Mitchell Lichtenstein. Exhibition Notes by renowned architect and MaGMA’s scenographer Jean-François Milou.

This beautiful, touching, and very comprehensive app offers a choice of three pre-set tours of the exhibition, as well as the flexibility for the user to meander freely. Double tap the images for high resolution viewing of the chefs d’œuvre, tap on the artist name to read the biography.
